Acne Treatment

BLU-U
Blue Light ACNE Treatments

There is now a treatment available that doesn't depend on medication to treat acne and other skin conditions. It is called the BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy. The BLU-U is a very special light that can kill the bacteria in your skin that causes acne.

Treatments are simple your face is cleansed to remove any oil you may have on your skin. A topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan (aminolevulinic acid or ALA) is then applied to your face. Abnormal cells, pores and oil glands absorb Levulan. This makes these areas more susceptible to the light treatment.

During the treatment with BLU-U Blue Light you will experience little or no discomfort. Slight warmth in the treatment area may be felt. BLU-U Blue Light treatment lasts from 8 to 16 minutes.

Most patients experience mild sunburn like redness and or peeling after the BLU-U acne treatment with Levulan that can last for a few days. After Levulan is applied the area will be sensitive to sunlight or other intense light sources for 48 hours. Therefore, it is important that following a treatment a sunscreen with zinc oxide and SPF# 30 or higher is used regularly for the 48 hours following treatment. Failure to do this can result in redness and peeling that may last up to 10 days.

Most people require a series of three treatments at two-week intervals.

When BLU-U acne Blue Light treatments are medically necessary as deemed by your dermatologists we will submit the claim to your insurance company.
